Join the Hiroshima

First off, read the rules!

The Rules page is essential reading for anyone wanting to join the USS Hiroshima. You must follow the rules if you’re a member, so it’s good to familiarize yourself with them first! The Common Questions page is also a good page to read before you apply, as it outlines why we don't offer certain positions and why we apply ranks in the way we do.

Designing a character

We will accept a wide range of different types of characters, and the Hiroshima has room for many kinds of personalities but there are some key aspects to keep in mind when designing your character:

  1. Keep it real: The character should not be unrealistic - i.e. a character should not have superpowers, be without flaws, or otherwise be unrealistic - e.g. I doubt that there’ll be a Borg dancer who happens to like tea and biscuits and enjoys a round of golf in the afternoons. Extreme example, I know, but keeping it real is also one of the best ways to make your character and your gaming experience fun.

  2. Include flaws: A character with flaws will be far more well rounded than one without. Everyone has flaws and areas in which they are not so strong - there is not a human being on this Earth who doesn’t, so bear that in mind when developing your character. For example, is your character a little unsure of himself in romantic situations, or is she a little too certain of her ideas?

  3. Choose a realistic species: Within the Federation there are over 150 species to select. Outside of the Federation, there are many species who could, with sponsorship from a senior officer, join Starfleet. There is a list of prohibited species on the Obsidian Fleet website.

  4. Develop your character to suit the position: by which I mean that an officer specialised in Tactical is not likely to become a Medical Officer. Develop your character with your position in mind. Of course, some characters can fit multiple roles.

  5. If you don’t see the position you want on the manifest, ask: We are willing to consider many characters, so if you don’t see what you like, contact the CO for consideration.

Fill in the application

Please apply via the USS Hiroshima application form below. You’ll also need to write a sample post as well as input your name and contact details, character information and experience. That sample post should be at least four paragraphs in length and should explore the character - making the readers want to know more is a good angle to go for. If you have never written a post and don’t know where to start, our Posting Archive is a good place to look, and you can direct any questions to the CO.

Ready to join? Click here to go to the application form.

Once you've submitted the form, you'll receive a response within seven days of one of the following types:

  • acceptance - you will receive an email letting you know that you've been accepted to the sim, what your starting rank will be, and any conditions of your acceptance (e.g. following the Cadet Academy training programme).
  • rejection - unfortunately, your application has been turned down on this occasion. The reasons will be stated, and if at all possible, we'll pass on your application to the Office of Personnel Management for consideration by another sim, or we will give you some advice on how to improve your application.
  • rejection without prejudice - sometimes we will reject an application for logistical reasons, e.g. we don't offer a specific department, the position has been filled since you applied, etc - for reasons that aren't inherently related to the quality of your application, but rather are specific to the sim. In almost every such case we redirect the application to OPM for consideration by another sim.
  • request for more information - you'll be asked to provide some more detail on some aspect of your application before we can process it completely.

If any of this seems alien to you or if you’re new to Obsidian Fleet or simming in general, contact the Command Staff who will be happy to help you. We can also provide you assistance with developing an application if you so wish.
